Situation Ethics - genetic engineering Daisy and Zoe
Situation Ethics • Situation Ethics is based on one principle: Ethics (or doing good) is a matter of always acting in agape (love). • Joseph Fletcher: “Our obligation is relative to the situation, but obligation in the situation is absolute.”
The Four Working Principles • PRAGMATISM- the act must be pragmatic. It must have practical consequences in order to achieve its aims. The basis for judging this is: does it serve the purposes of love? • RELATIVISM- act on the basis of relativism not absolutism. The theory rejects phrases ‘never’ or ‘always’. People must act in a way consistent with the law of love, based on the given situation. • POSITIVISM- a deliberate decision must be made in favour of the claim of faith, ‘God is love.’ An individual must decide in favour of Christian love. It cannot be verified by reason, but must be a free decision by individuals. • PERSONALISM- priority must be given to persons. People must come first. The theory always asks ‘what is the greatest assistance to people?
Genetic Engineering • Genetic engineering is any direct manipulation of an organism's genes. • New DNA may be inserted in the host genome by first isolating and copying the genetic material of interest using molecular cloning methods to generate a DNA sequence. • Or by synthesizing the DNA, and then inserting this construct into the host organism.
Situation ethics with genetic engineering • It would be the most loving thing to do to modify someone’s genes so that they don’t suffer or die • Genetic engineering could be considered pragmatic because making sure someone doesn’t suffer or die is practical because someone who is alive and well is more practical than someone who is dead or unwell.
Situation ethics with genetic engineering • It is also relative to the person getting this done because it is their chance to live a healthy life. • It can be considered as not positive because it can be seen as “playing God” and it is something that is not an act of faith. • It is also personal to the person because they have a chance at a better life which is putting them in front of the other principles.
