Manifest Destiny • Suddenly Americans began to think how the western lands should be settled. Americans disagreed about this. The disagreements helped start a bloody Civil War between the Northern and the Southern states.
By the 1860s the regions of the North and the South were very different.
The North • Was building cities, factories and railroads. • Needed a lot of workers for the factories. • Had workers who were free, not slaves.
The South • had few factories or large cities. • had most of its people still living on farms. • had large farms called plantations. • had African slaves who planted and harvested plantation crops, especially cotton.
North vs. South • Using Week 14 of the Social Studies Weekly, use the T-Chart to identify the differences between the North and the South before the start of the Civil War. • Glue into your SS textbook. • Read about “Slave Families.” In the chart provided, list some of the challenges slave children experienced during the 1800’s. • Glue into your SS textbook.
