  1. AUTOMOTIVE ENGINES COMPONENTS DESIGN Unit - 1

  2. Mention classification of engineering materials. • The engineering materials are mainly classified as • metals and their alloys, such as iron, steel, copper, aluminium, etc. • non-metals such as glass, rubber, plastics, etc. The metals may be further classified as • Ferrous metals • Non-ferrous metals.

  3. What is Ferrous metals? The ferrous metals are those which have the iron as their main constituents. Examples: cast iron, wrought iron and steel. What is non-ferrous metals? The non-ferrous metals are those which have metals other than iron as main constituents such as copper, aluminium, brass, tin, zinc, etc. The non-metals are ceramic materials and organic materials. The ceramic materials are oxides, carbides and nitrides of various metals. Examples: glass, brick, concrete, cement, etc. The organic materials are polymeric materials composed of carbon compounds. Examples: Paper, rubber, plastic, wood, paints, etc.

  4. Mention selection criteria for materials. The selection of material for designing purposes depends upon the following factors. • availability • suitability • cost • physical properties • mechanical properties Mention some physical properties of metals. The physical properties of metals are colour, size, shape, density, electrical, thermal conductivity and melting point.
