What is a Flash Drive • A USB flash drive is a NAND-type flash memory data storage device integrated with a USB interface. They are typically small, lightweight, removable and rewritable. • USB Flash Drives are sold with memory sizes anywhere from 32 Megabytes to 60 gigabytes.
Basic History • The first flash drives were created in 1998 by Dov Moran. Dov’s most significant contribution was that the flash drive was self-reliant and free of the need to install drivers. The first flash drives were produced by M-Systems and were in Europe. • Modern flash drives now have USB 2.0 connectivity. • The sizes of an 8 MB, 16 MB, 32 MB, and 64 MB. and this design was continued up to 256 MB. Asian manufacturers soon started making their own flash drives that were cheaper than the M-Systems series. The fastest drives available now use a dual channel controller.
How Does It Work? • Flash Drives (for the most part) are only active when connected to a computer USB port or USB hub. Flash drives have no battery or internal power source and are only powered by their connection to the computer. • Modern Operating Systems support USB Flash drives without the need to download a driver from disk or the web.
Essential Components There are typically three parts to a flash drive… • A Male type-A USB flash drives provides an interface to the host computer. • NAND flash memory chip stores data. • Crystal oscillator produces the device's main 12 MHz clock signal and controls the flash data output through a phase locked loop.

Common Uses • Personal Data Transport: Such as music or this slide show. • Arcade Games: When a new machine is brought in or if a machine needs maintenance the high scores are stored on a flash drive. • Flash drive are used by network administrators for loading new software and configurations for troubleshooting and maintenance.
TheGood and The Bad Good: Flash Drives are more convenient then some older forms of portable memory, Namely Floppy Disk. They Are… • More compact • Contain More Memory • Faster • And More reliable • Modern Operating Systems come with the ability to talk to USB drives without having to download an additional drive from the web or CD-Rom. Bad: • They are still breakable. • If something goes wrong with the Drive there’s no way to fix it because there’s no software on it and no anti-virus devices. • Like any form of flash memory they can only have a certain number of transactions before it fails.
