E v e n t s MAJOR LIFETIME • Matisse was born in La Cateau-Cambresis, France (Matisse pictured on the left) • In 1887-1888, Matisse studied law in Paris • When he was 21, Matisse became seriously ill • 1892- Matisse met Marquet (another artist) • 1894- Matisse’s first daughter, Marguerite was born although Matisse had not yet married the mother • 1898- Matisse married Amelie Paerre (pictured on the right)

  5. MATISSE’S later years • 1941- Matisse had a serious operation • 1948- Matisse designed an entire chapel for some Dominican nuns who helped him to recover after his operation. • Matisse created his famous paper cut-out artwork titled Beasts of the Sea • Henri Matisse died in 1954
