The burden of injury in Aboriginal people • Injuries are the third leading broad cause of the disease burden in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people • Little recognition of the burden or investment in preventative programs specifically targeting Aboriginal people • No research groups in Australia that target injury in Aboriginal people
Past and *current research • Evaluation of On the Road program in Northern NSW (Clapham) • Safe Koori Kids trial (Clapham) • Partnerships on bike helmets and safety in Bourke (Clapham) • Evaluation of the Bourke Alcohol Accord • Pilot road safety study - Bourke • Buckle Up Safely, Shoalhaven, Western Sydney • Safe Systems approaches to road safety • *Road Safety in Aboriginal People • *Driving Change • *Unintentional injury in Aboriginal children (IHope, UWS)
New projects • Burns in Aboriginal children (NHMRC) • Falls in Older Aboriginal people (NSW Health) • Buckle-Up – stepped wedge trial in 12 communities (NSW Health)
Growth of the program • slow growth, building on development of community partnerships and identification of key areas of concern, • possible by strong community collaborations, • focuses on capacity building in both community and research positions, • strong partnerships with Government.
