Mission Statement To prepare students to become productive, well-informed, and responsible members of society. Stromburg High School provides a flexible and varied curriculum that meets the intellectual, social, physical, cultural, technological, and career needs of its students. We are pleased to be able to share information about the many opportunities offered within our school and departments. Through cooperative efforts between our staff and the community, we support students' learning and growth both now and in the future.

Literacy for School Improvement Goal: Implement and assess the effects of the Literacy Improvement Focus for improved reading and writing skills for all students Why: Establish procedures to analyze the effectiveness of reading strategies to track student progress Action Plan: Create and administer quarterly benchmark assessments to track progress continuously throughout the school year
Literacy Goal: Review and revise the Special Education identification process to ensure students with special needs are receiving intensive instruction Why: According to data, students with special needs are not receiving individualized instruction Action Plan: Collaborate with specialists to identify students that qualify for special education services and provide ongoing staff development to regular and special education teachers to improve their teaching skills to ensure the success of all students
Literacy Goal: Review and revise the Gifted program to ensure challenging learning experiences Why: Increase access to a challenging curriculum Action Plan: Identify student needs and provide ongoing staff development to improve teaching skills in working with all modalities in the classroom
Literacy Goal: Develop strategies to explicitly teach reading comprehension skills Why: Data reveals that reading comprehension is a major area of weakness Action Plan: Focus on reading comprehension skills (literal, inferential, and critical reading skills), determine common content and literacy skills for vertical and horizontal mastery at each grade level, incorporate higher level thinking skills with guidance provided by a literacy coach
Technology for School Improvement • Goal: Increase student access to and use of technology to support learning inside and outside school • Why: So students can routinely and efficiently use online information resources to meet needs for collaboration, research, publications, communications, and productivity • Action Plan: Raise funds for students to purchase personal computers through grant writing and student-organized community fund raisers
Technology • Goal: Facilitate access to disaggregated data in order to analyze student progress • Why: To help professional development committee and teachers determine how student learning can be improved • Action Plan: Provide software and professional development so teachers can directly access the data
Technology • Goal: Teachers will integrate technology into their lessons • Why: According to the data from performance appraisals, 10 percent of the staff needs improvement in this area • Action Plan: Need to assess current skills and resources • Action Plan: Need to determine how to help teachers match student learning goals with available resources

Professional Development Goal: The school will plan for authentic professional development that targets specific areas of student learning Why: To make instructional decisions based on analysis of school data Action Steps: Subject area teachers will disaggregate and analyze student data to identify performance trends on benchmark and state assessments. Next, teachers will collaborate in creating instruction that targets specific areas of need identified by the data.
Professional Development Goal: The school will plan for authentic training that targets individualized professional growth plans. Why: To enhance teacher efficacy and quality Action Steps: Instructional leaders will conduct observations and conferences with individual teachers to determine training needs
Professional Development Goal: To improve student conduct Why: To decrease discipline infractions that interferes with student learning and affects the school climate Action Step: The staff will research and implement a more effective school-wide behavior management system
Communication for School Improvement Goal: The school will implement initiatives to promote communication between parents, teachers and students. Why: Parents will be informed about what to expect when their child attends Stromburg. Action Plan: Institute a spring orientation for incoming freshman and their parents
Communication Goal: The school will actively pursue involvement and support by members of the local community. Why: High school students are often unaware of career opportunities within the community. Business professionals have the expertise to present information about career opportunities. Action Plan: Invite professionals from local businesses to discuss career options with juniors and seniors
Communication Goal: The school will implement team building strategies that encourage collegiality among staff. Why: Creating a balance between teaching and planning for all teachers leads to a positive school climate Action Plan: Administration will re-allocate teaching responsibilities for equitable distribution of planning periods.
