A long long time ago, in a place called New York… • Born February 8th, 1932 in Queens, New York. • Father was a musician with the Raymond Scott Quintet. • At 16 he moved to Los Angeles and attended North Hollywood High School. • Drafted after High School where he composed for the Air Force Band.
The Padawan • After the service, Williams attend the famed Julliard School of Music. • Composed themes to Gilligan’s Island(pilot), Lost in Space, and many others. • Gained experience by working with many notable composers of the time.
The Jedi • In 1974 John Williams meets Steven Spielberg and begins the Golden Era of Film scores. • In 1975 he writes the famous two note motif for the movie Jaws. • In 1977 he composes the music for Star Wars-A New Hope. It becomes the highest grossing non popular music in history.

Jaws (Main Theme) • 0:00 – The two note leitmotif begins. • 0:24 – The pace quickens and other instruments are introduced. Orchestra hits build the tension • 1:04 – Strings enter with the melody giving the song a whirlwind feel • 1:20 – Leitmotif picked up by brass section symbolizing the sharks powerful attack and impending danger • 1:52 – Song begins to get quieter and quieter as if shark is swimming away and bringing relief.
Close Encounters of a Third Kind (Main Theme) • 0:00 – Song begins with dissonance that grows louder and louder as if something mysterious is approaching • 0:32 – Orchestra hit; symbolizes the sudden apparition of mysterious thing. Dissonance continues in the background. • 0:42 – Brass and percussion begin arches to represent something stepping closer, dissonance continues. • 1:55 – Strings take over building on the suspense ascending in pitch with a flurry feel. • 2:58 – Choir enters giving a mystical atmosphere to the song. • 3:46 – Strings introduce the songs melody. • 4:29 – Variation of “When you wish upon a star”. Noted as being one of the principle influences for the movie. • 5:45 – Harp enters and gives you the feeling of flying. • 7:04 – Song begins to build to a climax. • 7:33 – Climax • 8:34 – Orchestra hit begins the resolution. • 9:48 – Harp quietly brings the song to close as if something has just left.
Memoirs of a Geisha (Sayuri’s Theme) • 0:00 – Gong strikes • 0:16 – One lone cello carries the melody, with other playing in the background symbolizing both the beauty of the main character but also the loneliness and isolation. • 0:50 – Gong strikes again separating the solos. • 0:54 – Flute begins solo, later accompanied in the background by cello.
