SIMILE A direct comparison between two basically different things. A simile is introduced by the words “like” or “as”.
SIMILE My love is like a red, red rose.
METAPHOR An implied comparison between two basically different things and is not introduced with the words “like” or “as”.
METAPHOR The eyes were daggers that cut right through me.
HYPERBOLE A great exaggeration to emphasize strong feeling.
Hyperbole He was so hungry he could have eaten a horse.
HYPERBOLE I will love you until all the seas go dry.
PERSONIFICATION Human characteristics are given to non-human animals, objects, or ideas.

IMAGERY The use of sensory details that appeal to the five senses.

Onomatopoeia A figure of speech which suggests or imitates the sound of what it describes.
