MARITIME EDUCATION IN TURKU SINCE 1813 • The maritime training in Turku has a long history. The navigation school was established in 1813 and became the first school to educate students to a profession in Finland. • From beeing a school with 10 students in year 1813 the establishment is nowadays running the training of around 500 students. • The name of the school has changed for several times during the years. Since 1.8.2008 the name Aboa Mare is used. ABOA MARE

ABOA MARE • Trains Sea-captains and Sea-engineers at Novia University of Applied Sciences • Trains Watch-officers for deck and engine at Axxell Vocational Upper Secondary school • Runs shortcourses and consultancy-activities for the shipping business Aboa Mare Ab
What is Aboa Mare • Co-operation between Novia and Axxell within maritime education (agreement). • Mutual qualitysystem (STCW, DNV). • Mutual staff • Mutual training facilities and equipment • Mutual company , Aboa Mare Ab, for shortcourses and consultancy activities with the maritime industry. ACTIVITIES 2011 • Sea-captain / Sea-engineer : 297 students • Watchofficer deck and engine: 190 students • Courses for the maritime industry approximately 1400 participants • Staff all together 32 persons, 24 teachers (13 Captains and 3 Engineers) ABOA MARE
