GENOTYPE VS. PHENOTYPE • Aa, Bb, cc, dD, eE, FF, Gg, Hh, ii, JJ, kK, ll, MM….OH MY!!! April 2, 2013
By the end of the day… • Achievers on the ROAD to college will know the difference between a phenotype and a genotype. • Achievers on the ROAD to college will be able to predict a phenotype using a given genotype. • Achievers on the ROAD to college will be able to answer our question of the day!!
QUESTION OF THE DAY!! • How is the way that we look (phenotype) related to our DNA (genotype)? • How do we get from a strand of DNA to a blonde haired, green eyed Ms. O’Hara?
How organisms look vs. How their genes look? • The alleles for the dimple trait are written above each child below. • DDDddDdd • Which kids have dimples and which ones don’t?
GENOTYPE • The way the (1)alleles are written is called its genotype. • DD, Dd, dd are all genotypes for dimples • (2)AA, Aa, AABbare all examples of genotypes
PHENOTYPE • What an organism (3)looks like • It is the genotype expressed in a way we can observe. • In our example, dimples or no dimples give the phenotype • (4)Tall, green seeds, brown hair are all examples of phenotypes • Phenotype = Physical
There are 2 dimple phenotypes: Dimples No Dimples
BUT. There are 4 dimple genotypes. DD DddDdd
Phenotype or Genotype?? • Tt GENOTYPE
Phenotype or Genotype?? • Tall PHENOTYPE
Phenotype or Genotype?? • Ll GENOTYPE
Phenotype or Genotype?? • Wrinkly PHENOTYPE
Phenotype or Genotype? • Big Lips PHENOTYPE
HOMOZYGOUS • Organism that has (5)two identical alleles for a given trait • AA, aa, BB, bb are all examples ((6)Bothletters are either capital or lowercase)
HETEROZYGOUS • Organism that has two (7)differentalleles for the same trait • Called a (8)hybrid for that trait • Aa, Bb are examples (one letter is a capital and one is lowercase)
Homozygous or Heterozygous?? • HH HOMOZYGOUS
Homozygous or Heterozygous? • Kk HETEROZYGOUS
Homozygous or heterozygous? • nn HOMOZYGOUS
Homozygous or heterozygous?? • Jj HETEROZYGOUS
ROAD check • Remind me, what does phenotype mean? • What does genotype mean?
Genotype and Phenotype BB or Bb=brown eyes bb= blue eyes With genotype BB, what phenotype would we see? Brown eyes
Genotype and Phenotype SS or Ss= brown skin ss=white skin • With genotype Ss, what phenotype would we see? Brown skin
Genotype and Phenotype LL or Ll=big lips ll=small lips What would the genotype be for big lips?? LL or Ll
Genotype and Phenotype SS or Ss=brown skin ss=white skin • With phenotype white skin, what genotype(s) could we see? ss
Genotype and Phenotype DD or Dd= dimples dd= no dimples If you notice your little brother has no dimples, what must his genotype(s) be?? dd

QUESTION OF THE DAY!! • How is the way that we look (phenotype) related to our DNA (genotype)? • How do we get from a strand of DNA to a black haired, green eyes? • BB or Bb = brown hair, bb = blonde hair • GG or Gg = green eyes, gg = blue eyes

Independent Practice • You are going to create a Paper Pet using a genotype that is given to you. • Each person in your group will have a different genotype (SO DON’T TRY TO COLOR EXACTLY WHAT YOUR NEIGHBOR DOES )
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE CONTINUED… • You are going to use the chart on your paper to help you figure out what phenotype corresponds to your given genotype • You will then draw or color those characteristics on your paper pet.
On the back of your paper pet: My paper pet had these phenotypes: ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________
