What is a philosophical mistake? Mistake: “to understand, interpret, or evaluate wrongly” Determinism There are mechanical causes for all effects. RIGHT Indeterminism Some effects do not have mechanical causes (e.g., free will). WRONG
Fundamental Assumptions • They always have opposites. • They never can be completely proven. • If more than one, they must be consupponible.
4. INSEPARABILITY Just as there is no motion without matter, so there is no matter without motion
8. INFINITY The universe is infinite, both in the microscopic and the macroscopic directions.
10. INTERCONNECTION All things are interconnected, that is, between any two objects exist other objects that transmit matter and motion.
What is Matter? Matter is an abstraction for “all things.” With INFINITY, we assume that all things contain other things, ad infinitum. That is, we assume that there are no partless parts. Matter exists, that is, matter has three dimensions and location with respect to other things. All things are portions of the universe, which is infinite.
What is Motion? Motion is an abstraction for what things do. Motion does not “exist,” it occurs. Motion is not “part” of the universe. Motion is not “connected” or “attached” to matter. Examples of motion: sound, fire, light, time.
Language as the Key to Reality All languages are based on nouns and verbs. That is, things and their motions. We can imagine matter without motion, but we cannot imagine motion without matter. That is, we can have legs without running, but we cannot have running without legs. Problem: Giving motion a name unavoidably tends to “objectify” “it.”
Distinguishing Between Matter and Motion The universe consists of one thing (matter) and presents us with two phenomena (matter and the motion of matter). Because matter has three dimensions and location, and motion does not, I can put matter in my back pocket (e.g., rocks), but not motion (e.g., earthquakes). The failure to distinguish clearly between matter and the motion of matter is the foundation of the 20th century regression in physics.
Matter-Motion Terms P = mv F = ma E = mc2 Space-time
What is wrong with matter-motion terms? Nothing, as long as we: Remember that they are concepts or abstractions. Avoid objectifying the motion they seek to explain. Avoid deobjectifying the matter they seek to explain.
Objectification of Motion Precedents • Confusion involving matter- motion terms in physics • We do it all the time • Caloric “fluid” Lavoisier (1783) • Light (Table of the Elements)
Objectification of Motion Einstein’s Contribution • Time equivalent to length • “Time dilation” • Light is matter (e.g., photon is matterless particle) • Time is a dimension
“Tests” of Relativity Hafele-Keating (1972) Clocks flying around Earth. Eddington (1919) Eclipse observation. Pound-Rebka (1960) “Massless” photons affected by gravity.
Hafele-Keating (1972)Clocks Fly Around Earth -------------------------------- Nanoseconds ------------------------------ Kelly (2000)
Eddington (1919) Eclipse Observations • Moody (2009): 1) Instruments too poor to measure anything; 2) The greatest hoax in 20th century science • Dowdye (2010): 1) Light bending was refraction in Sun’s plasma; 2) No effect at 2R as predicted by GRT.
Pound-Rebka (1960) Gravitational Redshift • Redshift up and blueshift down • Interpreted as a proof of GRT • An incidental falsification of SRT, which assumes that photons are massless • Actually a proof that entrained ether is the medium for light and gravitation
Pauli (1930) Invents the Neutrino • Mechanistic calculations for energy input resulted in the correct values for experimental output during radioactive decay • Relativity calculations for energy input were too high • The surplus motion was objectified by converting it into matter in the form of the neutrino, which has yet to be proven to exist
Einstein (1916) Invents Space-time • SRT: Einstein incorrectly substitutes l for t (Bryant, 2011) • This objectification of motion treats time as a dimension • Critical component of universal expansion hypothesis by avoiding our improbable location at the origin of the Big Bang
Conclusions The 20th century regression in physics may be traced to the objectification of motion led by Einstein. Both SRT and GRT objectify motion. This automatically makes Einstein WRONG! By definition, modern physicists don’t know what time is. The struggle against SRT, GRT, and the BBT is largely dependent on knowing what time is.
