  1. SUPERBAG • Leader: Riley Yap 1A2 • Members: Reagan Lee 1A2 Edwin Soh 1A2 Nicholas Kheng 1A2 Group: 3-001 superbag

  2. Content page • Introduction of Superbag • Problem, target audience, consequences... • Role of Superbag • Timeline • Sketch and pictures • Survey data • The flipside of Superbag • Invention log • Acknowledgements

  3. What exactly is superbag??? • It is a bag that can tell you its weight!

  4. problem identified • Students are carrying overloaded bags that give them shoulder aches and even stunt their growth in the long run because they do not know the weight of their bag.

  5. Target 对象 • Students, especially primary school students

  6. Current solutions • SPI bag (bag with special shape to prevent user from slouching) – very expensive so not all students can afford • Pamphlets/flyers/videos/websites that give people tips on how to prevent shoulder and back aches – not effective

  7. Average weight of primary school student’s bag After doing our very own survey on 15 primary students, here’s the average weight of a primary school student’s bag and percentage… • Highest weight: 6.3kg • Average weight: 4.85kg • Highest percentage: 21% • Average percentage: 15.18% This shows that the problem of overloaded bags is very serious…

  8. Consequences of carrying heavy bags • “Heavy bags put kids off balance, causing them to have a posture that increases the likelihood of lower back pain” ---Dr. Wayne Yankus, American Academy of pediatrics • Study conducted at Auburn University reported that carrying heavy bags may threaten the developing spine • Of the children who participated in the study, over half suffered from muscle soreness and back pain, while others suffered from numbness and shoulder pain • Source:http://www.ehow.com/about_5044276_back-caused-heavy-book-bags.html#ixzz1IvxqNR1Q

  9. Rationalewhat Superbag does • Creates awareness of the weight of the student’s bag • Allows students to prevent overloading their bags • Help prevent shoulder and back aches • Improves posture from young • Prevents stunning of growth in the long run

  10. Timeline

  11. Timeline

  12. Survey data (9th April)Sample size: 20 students • Do you feel that your bag is heavy, causing discomfort and giving you shoulder and back aches?

  13. Survey data (9th April)Sample size: 20 students • Would you buy this product if it was sold? • How would you rate this invention? (excellent/good/bad/very bad)

  14. Survey data (9th April)Sample size: 20 students • What price do you think is reasonable for this bag?

  15. Comments/suggestions • I’ll be able to know if my bag is too heavy so I won’t get shoulder aches! That’s cool! • I can prevent shoulder and back aches so my spine will not get injured. However, users might just ignore the weight even if it’s too heavy. There should be an alarm or buzzer. • It is a good idea, pretty practical, and cannot be found anywhere in the markets.

  16. Design of Superbag • Original: Just a platform connected to the weighing scale • After modifications: platform connected to weighing scale with piece of material in front to prevent books from falling out of platform. Base of platform is also tilted inwards so the books will not fall forward, hence making the reading more accurate.

  17. Final design Weighing scale pocket platform Base tilted inwards at about 60 degrees

  18. PICTURES! objects platform Weighing scale connection

  19. Bad Points of Superbag  • You have to lift the bag up first then only can it weigh itself • It doesn’t have an alarm if it’s too heavy for you • The weighing scale might take a while to switch on sometimes

  20. Some Advice • Carry haversacks with straps on both shoulders – spread out stress • Do not put unnecessary things in your bag – reduce weight • Do not squeeze bulky things into your bag – bag won’t be bulky, reduce weight

  21. Invention log • inventionlog.wordpress.com
