  2. Why she is famous? • In the 1930s Nancy Bird Walton became known as the "Angel of the Desert", working with the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

  3. Who is she? • Nancy Bird Walton was born in Sydney in 1915 and died in 2009. • She was the founder of the Australian Women Pilots' Association, which was the starting block for a proud generation of female pilots, who now fly alongside men in Australia's skies.

  4. She wanted to fly • From an early age, she was known for climbing onto fences and declaring herself to be an 'eppy plane’. • In 1933, at the age of 17, she became the youngest Australian woman to gain a pilot's license. • In 1934, she obtained her commercial license.

  5. What did she achieve? • In 1936 Nancy won the Ladies’ Trophy in the Adelaide-Brisbane Air Race. • Commandant of the Women’s Air Training Corps during World War II and in 1950 founder of the Australian Women Pilots’ Association. • Awarded an OBE in 1966, for her work as pilot to the Far West Children's Health Scheme. • In 1990 was awarded an AO by the Australian government.

  6. How did she affect the lives of other Australians? • She was an inspiring Australian who was passionate about life, helping others and the joy of flying. • Thanks to her pioneering air days, women are now working as airline captains, search and rescue pilots, and even flying nuns.
