  1. CORE COMPETENCIES:HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, DUAL LOYALTIES AND HUMAN RIGHTS THINGS I WISH I’D KNOWN

  2. That there were important things to learn outside of chemistry, physics, anatomy, physiology, pathology, bacteriology, and all the other subjects which were decided for us from the first day of year one to the last day of year six.

  3. That reading beyond the prescribed text books was also required.

  4. That the humanities offer insights into and a way of understanding the human condition that no study of the inner workings of the body can ever provide.

  5. That discussion of current events within a context of health professional training could offer salutory lessons to HPs in training – and challenge them to think beyond the safe confines of the hospital/ clinic setting.

  6. That the Western view of the world – and understanding of health, disease and the body - was but one of many, and had its own limitations and failings.

  7. That patients themselves (and their families) had a huge amount to teach me – they weren’t simply sources of signs and symptoms.

  8. That, while my teachers knew a hell of a lot, they didn’t know everything about everything, and I could have learned more if I had challenged them more.

  9. That as a doctor I would not always (or necessarily even more often than not) have the right answer for every situation.

  10. That uncertainty was OK – and it was OK to confess to that uncertainty.

  11. In summary • Look beyond your comfort zones and what is familiar for knowledge • Question and challenge those in authority • Be vulnerable • Be aware of your own inadequacies • Ask when you don’t know or don’t understand

  12. How? • Model the behaviours we wish to instill • Curriculum • Encourage thinking beyond the confines of traditional disciplines • Diversity of classes, faculty, content and teaching methodology

  13. “I ask for water to wash myself with, and also soap and a comb. I need money to buy food, I live on bread only here. Is it compulsory for me to be naked? I am naked since I came here?”
