  1. Daniel 1 Daniel Dared to be Godly

  2. What does it mean to be godly? • To be godly is to fear and respect God so much that you live to please Him even when it is not easy. • The Bible says, • 2 Timothy 3:12  Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. • What made Daniel a godly young man?

  3. Being Godly is Never Easy • Circumstances were against Daniel • He is separated from his family (they may have been killed) • He was young (probably a teenager) • He was in a foreign country – Babylon • He was a slave • The king made him a eunuch so he could never have children. It is not easy to do what pleases God. You may be young. Your family may not love God. Your friends may think you are crazy. You may feel like you are all alone.

  4. Being Godly is Never Easy • The king’s law was against Daniel • The king appointed Daniel’s daily food and drink • Daniel 1:5  And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king. • Eating the king’s food would not please God, but it was the law. • It had been offered to the idols. • It was unclean for a Jew to eat. • To eat it would be a sin.

  5. Being Godly is Never Easy • Other slaves disagreed with Daniel • They feared the king more than God. • They ate what the king required. • They did not try to be godly. • They lived for self. There will always be people who disagree if you decide to live godly. They may laugh at you. They may even stop being your friend. Being godly is not easy!

  6. Daniel Dared to be Godly • Daniel purposed it in his heart • Daniel 1:8  But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. • As a young teen, his heart was already godly. • He had already placed his faith in God. • He had already learned to fear God. • He had already learned to obey.

  7. Daniel Dared to be Godly • Daniel purposed it in his heart • Daniel decided in his heart to be godly. • Daniel knew what God wanted him to do. • Daniel decided to obey God • Daniel’s decision was on his own • He was even willing to die to be godly. • He requested to be excused from eating. To be godly, you must decide what is right and do it no matter what happens.

  8. Daniel’s parents cultivated in him a godly heart before he became a teenager. He loved God. He feared God. He did right. He put God first even when everything in life was against him. Parent, what are you doing to cultivate godliness in your children?

  9. Daniel Dared to be Godly • Daniel proved God’s power • The devil may have tempted Daniel. • “You are a slave. God doesn’t love you.” • “Everyone else is doing it!” • “You will really like it!” • Daniel bravely ask for a test. • Daniel 1:12  Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. • He believed that God would make him strong eating just vegetables.

  10. Daniel Dared to be Godly • Daniel gladly ate vegetables • He was happy to eat vegetables to be godly. • He loved God more than he loved the nice things in life. • He loved God more than the praise of men. Do you love God enough to give up things you like to be godly?

  11. Daniel Received God’s Blessing • God caused the prince to like Daniel • Daniel 1:9  Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs. • Because Daniel dared to be godly, the Lord worked in the heart of Daniel’s prince. • The prince risk his life to test Daniel. • God made Daniel more healthy than the slaves that disobeyed God (v.15).

  12. Daniel Received God’s Blessing • God gave Daniel special wisdom • Daniel 1:17  As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. • God made Daniel wiser than all the king’s other wise men (Daniel 1:20).

  13. What about you? • It is easy to be ungodly. • Disobey, lie, cheat, fight, talk bad, be lazy, be unkind, don’t study the Bible, and don’t take time to pray. • God is looking for a man, woman, boy, or girl who will be godly. • To be godly, you must first be a true Christian. Are you a Christian? • Will you dare to be godly like Daniel? • Do you want God’s blessing enough to be willing to be different?

  14. What about you? • Parent, what are you doing to cultivate godliness in your children? • Are you teaching your children Bible principles? • Are you seeking to lead them to Christ for salvation? • Do you biblically discipline them so they learn to do right? • Do you live a godly life in front of your children?
