  2. Who Invented it? • Dr. James Naismith was born during 1861 in Ontario, Canada • Became McGill University’s Athletic Director • Introduced the game in 1891 at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts • First played with two peach baskets and a soccer ball

  4. Why Did He Invent It? • Needed a recreational sport that could be played indoors due to the weather in Massachusetts • Wanted a sport that would develop skills • Did not want another sport the depended exclusively on strength

  5. The Rules of the Game • The game is played with 5 players on the court for each team • The object is to put the basketball in your own basket • To advance the ball down the court, you must dribble if you are going to walk/run with the ball or pass the ball to a teammate

  6. The Rules of the Game (cont.) • The game is usually played with 4 quarters varying in length, except in college basketball the game is played in two halves.
