What is a Podcast? Why Should I Podcast? LeRoy Wong Boston Public Schools OIIT
A podcast: • Is an electronic audio file (but can contain images and video) • Can be subscribed to through something called RSS (Really Simple Syndication) • Is listened to or watched on a computer or mp3 player
A podcast (continued): • Can be a “traditional” radio program or media broadcast, but can be specialized for whatever purpose you want (entertainment, education, etc.) • Allows anyone with access to podcasting tools to spread their message to anyone else on the Internet
Why should I podcast? • It’s relatively cheap to create them • It’s something that can be accessed anytime and anywhere you have an Internet connection • Everyone’s doing it, so I should do it too :-) (but seriously, many people including students use iPods and other mp3 players, so why not try to use them educationally?)
Some things to keep in mind: • What is the content? What message or concept am I trying to get across? • What is my instructional goal? • What is the context for podcasting? How does this relate to other things I’m teaching?
More things to keep in mind: • Try to plan your podcasts as much as possible (scripting or storyboarding really helps) • Make the podcast as short as you can. If it starts getting long, consider making chapters • Make it interesting and high-energy
