  4. Answer Have you answered the question fully? You may need to use words as well as numbers to make your answer clear. What were you meant to find out? Check Check your answer. If possible, use the inverse operation to check your working. E.g. If you did 123-75= 48, check by adding: 48+ 75= ?

  5. 1. In the Library There are 456 picture books in the library. 109 get lost or damaged and have to be removed from the catalogue. Ms. Colleen orders 278 more picture books for next year. How many picture books will there be in the school library at the start of next school year?

  6. 2. Seats for assembly For the Lower Primary assembly, the maintenance team put out 4 rows of 15 chairs for parents. They also put another 28 chairs around the hall for staff. How many chairs did they put out altogether?

  7. 3. Party Planning P5A decide to have a party. They want everyone to have 2 slices of Pizza, 1 cup of juice, half an apple and kinder surprise. 1 pizza is cut into 8 slices. I carton of juice gives 6 cups. How many pizzas, cartons of juice and apples do P5A need to buy? There are lots of steps to choose and follow for this problem!

  8. Word Problem 1. There are 25 crayons in a packet. MsNiki had 13 packets in her art room. During last term 137 crayons were used up. How many crayons are left?

  9. Word Problem 2. The cafeteria had 4 packets of 60 plastic cups at the beginning of the week. By Friday 183 have been used. How many are left for next week?

  10. Word Problem 3. THERE ARE 82 FELT TIP PENS IN A TUB. A SHOP HAS A SPECIAL OFFER TO BUY ONE TUB AND GET 1 FREE. NUTSA BUYS THEM. ON THE WAY HOME SHE DROPS HER SHOPPING AND LOSES 79 PENS. HOW MANY ARE LEFT?

  11. Word Problem 4. 125 people are invited to a party. There are each allowed to bring 1 person with them. Everyone who is invited comes to the party. 87 people come on their own. How many people come to the party?

  12. Word Problem 5. At a football match 278 people come to watch the home team. 145 come to watch the away team. At half time it rains and 175 people leave. How many stay to watch the second half?

  13. Word Problem 6. P6 are doing an inquiry into pets. There are 506 books about animals in the library. 279 have been borrowed. How many books about animals are left in the library?

  14. Problems • A baker’s shop has 324 loaves of bread for sale at 9.00am. By 10.30am 116 loaves have been sold. How many are left? • At the start of a football match there are 453 supporters watching. It starts to rain at half time and 239 supporters leave. How many are left to watch the second half?

  15. Problems • A theatre sells 250 tickets on Monday for Thursday’s show. On Tuesday they sell 311 tickets. On Wednesday The theatre announces that one of the stars of the show has had to cancel and an understudy will perform instead. 244 people return their tickets. How many people will come to the show on Thursday?
