CHAPTER 7Developing and Maintaining a Learning Environment “Where all people think alike, no one thinks very much.” -Walter Lippmann
Routines – Specified procedures for frequently occurring class events • Rules – general expectations for behavior
Rules About “Rules” • Student input • Positive • Explicit (posted, if possible) • Reinforce (Consistent & Fair) • Few
Routines & Rules • Establish Expectations Early • Hold them Accountable • Reinforce
Do’s and Don’ts • Do… • Use student names • Expect good behv • Firm & consistent • Don’t… • Publicly reprimand • Downgrade students • Engage in confrontation • Give threats • Yell at students (If you show “no control” as an adult, then what can we expect from them?)
To Think About… • Student does not know what they did wrong… • How often is “embarrassment” effective? (teacher yelling at student) • Rewards for “expected” behaviors… • Backwards rewards… “Because you did well this week, you … 1. …don’t ‘have to’ learn today.” 2. …don’t ‘have to’ improve fitness today.” ? What if we replaced ‘have to’ with ‘get to’ ?
