Duex Ex Machina Example: In Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the Evil Queen is about to kill the dwarfs when a bolt of lightning comes out of nowhere, knocking her off the mountain to her death.
Other Examples of Duex Ex Machina • War of the Worlds – unconquerable invaders killed by a virus • The Return of the King in The Lord of the Ring series – Sam and Frodo travel across Middle Earth for months, but are suddenly rescued by an eagle and taken back to Minas Tirith • Lord of the Flies – children rescued by a passing navy officer • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – The phoenix brings a sword and then cries on Harry to heal his wounds.
Function of Duex Ex Machina • Remains a popular tool even today, being employed in modern • films, • novels, • short stories. • Multifaceted tool. • It can be employed for the purposes of: • moving the story forward • when the writer has “painted himself into a corner” and finds no other escape, • he uses is to surprise the audience, • to bring a happy ending into a tale, • as a comedic device.
