  2. Duex Ex Machina • Definition: An unexpected power or event saving a hopeless situation, especially as a plot device in a play or novel, from the Latin “a god from a machine.”

Other Examples of Duex Ex Machina • War of the Worlds – unconquerable invaders killed by a virus • The Return of the King in The Lord of the Ring series – Sam and Frodo travel across Middle Earth for months, but are suddenly rescued by an eagle and taken back to Minas Tirith • Lord of the Flies – children rescued by a passing navy officer • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – The phoenix brings a sword and then cries on Harry to heal his wounds.
