  1. S Mulch Area of cone = rs Area of base = r2 SA = rs + r2 V = 1/3  r2 h A = 4r2 V = 4/3  r3 Calculating for volume for a 3 dimensional object

  2. The following formula is used to calculate volume: Square L x W x D = cu. (ft, yd, etc) cuft, cuyd cuft = 12” x 12” x 12” or ? Cuyd = 3’ x 3’ x 3’ or ? Circle π x r2 x D = cu. (ft, yd, etc) cuft, cuyd 1728 cuin in a cuft 27 cuft in a cuyd

  3. The following formula is used to calculate cubic feet: L” x W” x D” = cu. ft. Or L’ x W’ x D’ = cuft 1728 Example: 60’ x 3’ bed w/ 2” layer of mulch 60’ x 3’ x 2” = 12”

  4. 60’ x 3’ x 2” = 12 180 ftsq x 2”= 12 360 = 30 cu. ft. 12

  5. The following formula is used to calculate cubic feet for tree rings: V = x r2 x D Example: 3.14 x 8’2 circle w/ 2” layer of mulch 3.14’ x 64 sqft x 2” = 12”

  6. 3.14’ x 64 sq.ft. x 2” = 33.49 cu.ft. 12” or = 34 cu.ft. 1 wheel barrel = 6 cu.ft. How many wheel barrel loads? 5.7 loads

  7. Calculating the Amount of Mulch You Need Although lawns and garden beds are measured in feet, mulch is purchased in "yards" A "yard" of mulch is actually a cubic yard - one yard wide by one yard high by one yard deep

  8. The following formula converts feet to cubic yard: L x W x D = cu. Yds 27 Example: 60’ x 3’ bed w/ 2” layer of mulch 60 x 3 x 2/12 = 27

  9. 60 x 3 x 2/12 = 27 180 x 1/6 = 27 30 = 1.1 cu. yds 27
