About the Organization: • Asante Mariamu is a non-profit organization • It focuses on increasing awareness of the dangers and threats people living with albinism in East Africa • Brings attention to the deadly black market that sells body parts from albino people to those who believe they will bring wealth and luck • Asante Mariamualso focuses on awareness of the numerous cases of skin cancer of people with albinism because of inadequate supplies to treat and prevent
What is Albinism? • Albinism is a genetic condition caused by recessive genes inherited from both parents. • It causes clear sensitive skin • People with albinism also called albinos suffer from a varying degree of visual impairment • With appropriate protection from UVA and UVB waves people can enjoy a normal lifespan
Albinism Statistics: • 1 out of 17,000 people in the US has albinism • 1 in 1,000 people in East Africa have Albinism • This number is higher in East Africa because rural tribes have more isolated genetic pools • Most people wit albinism have sight so impared that they are not able to drive
What we do as a club: • We will make and sell products • We talk and learn about the tragic circumstances people with albinism half to face • We will have guest speakers come to talk to us • We will meet once a week after school
Raising Money • Students will sell candy bars throughout the year: • Do not be disruptive to class members • Don’t take candy out during class lesson • The first Monday of each week we will meet and make beads that we will sell at the end of the year • We will let you know how to make them as you guys come to the Monday meetings • Bring scissors, glue and magazines if possible
Guest Speakers • We will have guest speakers that are suffering from Albinism and can tell us about there lives • We will have people representing the Asante Mariamu organization come and speak to our class
Accomplishments • Last year we raised $2,000 • We raised awareness of albinism and our club
Why you should be a part of this club? • You get to do a great thing for people that need your help • You will learn a lot about albinism and the lives it effects • You will make great friends and learn skills that will help you in the future
Come to our next meeting!! We will meet in the little theater tomorrow after school 3:15pm come ready to learn more about albinism and make some beads.
