  3. What’s a sentence? A Subject + A Predicate = A Sentence • The subject tells us who or what. • The predicate tells us what about it. • Length does not determine what is and is not a sentence. • Regardless of how long or short a group of words is, it needs two parts to be a sentence: a subject and a predicate.

  4. Review: The Subject • The subject tells us who or what the sentence is about. • He likes basketball. • The Morris Family cheered for the Huskies. • John Wallace Middle School is the name of our school. How Do I find a SUBJECT? Look for a noun or Pronoun

  5. Our Focus: The Predicate The predicate tells what the subject is, has, does, or feels. Ralph jumped up and down. The tall girl is the team captain. The Civitillos are cooking Thanksgiving dinner. How do you find a predicate? Look for a verb!

  6. What is a Verb? A verb tells what the subject of the sentence is, has, does, or feels. It is the most important part of the predicate! works fell hunt plays loves buy tripping Can you think of any verbs?

  9. What is an Action Verb? • Most verbs are action verbs. Some action verbs refer to physical action that can be seen by other people. • Others refer to mental action that cannot be seen. Physical Action: The gardener feeds the ducks. • Mental Action: She likes the migrating birds best.

  10. What are the common Verb suffixes?

  11. Being Verbs • Other verbs express a state of being. • These verbs do not refer to action of any sort. They simply tell what the subject is. • Burt is the gardener’s assistant. • He seems afraid of the swans. • One swan looks angry. • In fact, swans are hungry. Being Verbs There are 2 types of being verbs: Helping Being Linking Verbs Helping Verbs

  13. What are all the Helping Verbs? Am, is, are, was, were, be ,been, Have, has, had, Do, does, did, May, can, must, might, could, should would, Shall, will, being There are 23!

  14. Can you find the Verbs? Inventions have changed how people live. The first inventions appeared during the Old Stone Age. Early inventors had little education. Pioneers worked alone on their dreams. People usually work together in laboratories to produce new inventions. Modern businesses hire people with creative abilities. Designers have been using their talents to develop new products. They will be developing new products, such as safer toys for children.
