Stephen Colbert, Person of the Year By Emily Chackerian
Stephen Colbert • Stephen Colbert is the host of the satirical news show, the Colbert Report, which is known for educating the public on the government in an entertaining way. • Stephen Colbert should be person of the year because he educates the public on the ways of the government. Specifically in this year, he created a super PAC, and ran for a fake presidency in order to talk about the flaws in super PACs.
Stephen Colbert, informing the public • Colbert feels that the public should know what is happening in their government and when something is wrong. As previously mentioned he created his super pack because of this. • Colbert is successful at what he does because he presents the news in such a satirical way that it is quite entertaining. Although this is true, Colbert is still accurate and informative. He is an excellent alternate resource for learning about politics and other such things.
Success and Obstacles • Colbert’s current career was aided by a similar news show host, Jon Stewart. Before his show, Colbert was a special correspondent on Stewart’s show. He was popular enough that he got his own! • Because Colbert spends so much of his time making jokes, it may have taken people a while to start taking him seriously, which could be considered an obstacle.
The Future • I think that both Colbert’s immediate and long term future will find him continuing to do what he does now. His show is so popular and American government and politics will always be full of flaws for Colbert to point out.
Other Facts • Stephen Colbert is a huge Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit fan and beat the movie screen writer in a trivia contest. He also had “Hobbit Week” on his show. • Colbert has a book for children called I am a Pole (And So Can You). • Colbert Report is pronounced “ColbearRepor”
