Expanding the Compositional Scope of Peptide-Based Nanoparticle Superstructures Nathaniel L. Rosi, University of Pittsburgh, DMR 0954380 To date, we have established a conceptual framework for the design of nanoparticle superstructures using rationally designed peptide conjugate molecules and we have developed methodology for preparing various well-ordered gold nanoparticle superstructures (wires, helices, spheres, etc.). Here, we have expanded the compositional scope of this methodology by using peptides that bind to CoPt alloy nanoparticles. We have shown that biphenyl-PEPCo conjugates can direct the synthesis and assembly of hollow spherical CoPt nanoparticle superstructures, shown at right. We expect that these superstructures will be attractive as either catalytic vessels or theranostic agents (MRI imaging and drug delivery).
Undergraduates Lecturing and Career Development Workshops Nathaniel L. Rosi, University of Pittsburgh, DMR 0954380 At the University of Pittsburgh, I organized a professional development workshop for students in the chemistry department. The announcement for this workshop is included at the left. Speakers from national labs, industry, and small regional colleges participated. This workshop allowed participating students to interact 1-on-1 with Ph.D. and M.S. chemists who have pursued various career paths. Additionally, an undergraduate student of mine presented his research at his local high school. This is part of our effort to expand the reach of our research to high school students. At right, Mark is shown presenting his work.
