  2. INTRODUCTION Area, in mathematics, the size of an enclosed region, given in terms of the square of the unit of length. Formulas for the areas differ according to the shape.

  3. DID YOU KNOW? The Egyptians developed rules for determining the areas of rectangles, triangles, trapezoids, and circles.

  4. FORMULAS OF AREA OF REGULAR SHAPES • The next few slides show diagrams, labelling, properties and the formula of area of a few shapes. • NOTE:- This could become quite confusing!

  5. THE RECTANGLE AREA= length x breadth DIAGRAM LINES= = breadth = length

  6. THE SQUARE This shape has 4 sides equal so the formula for AREA= x2 x is any side of the square.

  7. THE TRIANGLE AREA= ½ base x height DIAGRAM LINES= = height = base

  8. THE CIRCLE OR SPHERE AREA= pi x r2 DIAGRAM LINES= pi = 3.71 r = radius = line from centre of circle to circumference= x= centre x

  9. THE PARRALLELOGRAM Area of Parallelogram= base x height Diagram lines= = height = base

  10. AREA IN OUR EVERY DAY LIFE The following slides are examples of when we need to calculate area.

  11. WALLPAPER • Interior designers need to know the area of the wall in order to be able to cover it with wall paper.

  12. PARQUET • The measurements of the floor are necessary for parquet to be fitted.

  13. Maps Cartographers definitely need to use area when they draw a map perfectly in scale.

  14. TILES • Without the area of the floor and tiles, the latter can’t be neatly fitted in.

  15. IRREGULAR SHAPES Sometimes, to find the area of an irregular shape, we would need to divide the shape into regular shapes (A and B the in example on the right), find their area and then add the multiple areas. B A A + whole area B =

  16. USE OF COMPOUND AREAS IN OUR EVERY DAY LIFE The following slides are examples of when the knowledge of how to calculate the area of an irregular shape comes in handy.
