Explanation of Fraud Internet fraud is a crime in which a person develops a way to invade your privacy by retrieving your personal information and using your personal information and/or your money for themselves.
Examples of Current Scams • The Nigerian Scam Emails sent out to many people that talked about a cry for help to get money. • Disaster relief scams Emails sent out to many people that ask for money because something tragic happened due to a disaster. • Credit Card Scams Takes your personal information and takes money from your credit card. • Travel Scams Emails that tell you, you have won a trip to some luxury place.
Tips for Avoiding Fraud • Make sure anything you download is safe • Guard your personal information • Be cautious of the emails you receive • Don’t give your personal information out to programs if you are not 100% what it is
Relevant Statistics In 2007… • About 70% of the fraud victims were scammed online though www links. • About 30% of the victims were scammed through email. • People who were scammed for credit cards/payments lost around $1,500.
