Unit One:Homeostasis and Immunity Digestive System
The Digestive System • *Student Learning Target: I can identify the general function and major organs of the digestive system. I can explain how the digestive system helps to maintain the homeostasis of the organism. • *Aim: How does the digestive system help us to maintain homeostasis?
What is it for? • Why do we eat food/drink water? • Energy! • Nutrients!
Notes Today: (20 min) • Define: • Homeostasis – the process of regulation of an organism’s internal environment in order to survive • Salivary glands • Amylase • Peristalsis • Pepsin • Villi
Notes Today: • Define: • Homeostasis – the process of regulation of an organism’s internal environment in order to survive • Salivary glands – secrete saliva into the mouth to moisten food • Amylase – enzyme that breaks down starch • Peristalsis – series of involuntary smooth muscle contractions to help move food • Pepsin – gastric juice secreted into the stomach to digest proteins • Villi – fingerlike lining of the small intestine that helps absorb food and nutrients
Digestion and Homeostasis • How does the digestive system help us maintain HOMEOSTASIS? • Gives us energy. • Absorbs nutrients. • Water/liquid absorption in the large intestines • Excretion of waste (Excretory system also)
Tomorrow: • Homework due, as always • Quiz! • Binders due, to be TURNED IN!
