Literacy • What is literacy? • Literacy is the ability to read, write, and see… or more broadly.. .How you react to and interpret verbal and visual language in particular ways as well as how you produce and use language to achieve certain kinds of goals. • True or False: Good readers are often good writers. • Answer: could be either, however, active readers are better writers!

Practical Reading Strategies • Preview – scan the piece, read all intro materials, look at the visual, get a sense of the piece before you begin reading. • Annotate – talk back to the text, jot down questions, disagreements, comments • Summarize – establish the author’s purpose, audience, main point, and support • Connect – emotionally or intellectually – find a relationship with the text • Respond – talk/write back

  6. Practical Reading Strategies • Review – after reading, go back to the top reconsidering the title, author, headings, intro, conclusion. You’ll discover a better sense of connection to the entire piece and see how the parts work together. • “Why Class Matters” by Bell Hooks • Read and annotate the selection

Rhetorical vocabulary • Alliteration – repetition of beginning consonant sounds • Imagery – creating sensory images through descriptive words • Diction – an author’s choice/use of words • Parallel Structure – the repetition of a specific grammatical pattern • Repetition – using the same word, phrase, or meaning for emphasis or effect • Voice – the speaker in the passage

  8. Rhetorical vocabulary • Tone – the attitude of the speaker in the passage • Personification – giving non-human things human characteristics whether through action or attribute • Periodic sentence – a sentence that finishes the main clause at the end of the sentence (near the period).

  9. Homework • Read pp. 2-10 of RD text – and take notes on important information! Use the Cornell note system! • “Why Write” – read and complete activities/questions 1-4 only • Bookmark web site on home computer.
