  3. Basic Beliefs • Vedas are ultimate authority • Reincarnation- • Soul migrates from one body to another after death • Karma- • Actions made in this life determine ones destiny in next life • Moksha- • Ultimate goal of all Hindus • Release from cycle of rebirth

  4. Practice • First approach: • Devotion to god or several gods • Rituals involving images of gods in home shrine • Second approach: • Philosophically minded • Ignore gods completely • Realization of the Self • Intense meditation • Center on importance of fulfilling duties associated with one’s social position and stage of life • Hatha Yoga • Locate and activate chakras (centers of energy) in the body • Remove disease in the mind and body • Physical postures, controlled breathing, calming of the mind through relaxation and meditation • Puja • Every morning after bathing and dressing but before taking any food or drink • Gazing upon an image of a god or goddess • Offering to the image: Flowers, food, lighting candle or incense

  5. Holidays • Hinduism has many holidays • There Holidays are based on the cycle of nature and mark the change of the seasons • Celebrate the lives of Rama or Krishna • Festivals intended to purify, renew society, help you through tough times, or to stimulate vital powers in nature

  8. Role of women The Hindu Women have a three staged life: • In the first stage, the girl’s parents are very protective • In the second stage, there is an arranged marriage • In the third stage, there husband dies and the woman goes through sati or widowhood

  9. Major Texts/Books 1. The Vedas are the oldest - collection of hymns, prayers, and magic spells. 2. The Mahabharata- is a story of a war between Pandava and the Kaurava. 3. The Upanishads- are stories and parables told by gurus (teachers) to their students 4. The Ramayana- is a story of the god Rama and the rescue of his wife Sita from Ravan, the evil demon king 5. The BhagavadGita -is the eternal message of spiritual wisdom from ancient India, is often called the Song of God, It contains some lessons about nature of God and of life. 6. The SatapathaBrahmana describes details of Vedic rituals 7. Aranyakas -books studied "in the forest" for saints 8. The Samhitas- are hymns that praise ancient Vedic deities 9. Puranas- compilations of old stories about gods, gurus,and kings, along with the ancestry of famous royal families.

  10. Vedas • There are four Vedas: • The Rig Veda -"Royal Knowledge" • The Sama Veda - "Knowledge of Chants" • The Yajur Veda - "Knowledge of Sacrificial Rituals" • The Atharva Veda - "Knowledge of Incarnations"

  11. Material wealth and social stature often lead to self-conceit and arrogance. They make those who have no self-knowledge become disaster-destined. These people make a great show of being pious: They perform sacrifices and give charity, just to have fun.- BhagavadGita, 16.15.

  12. Missionary & Outreach Work • Missionaries • Unaggressive, unintentionally converted while abroad • Spread by travelers & trade • Contributed to development of written tradition in Southeast Asia

  13. Origin & Diffusion until 600 CE • “Timeless Religion” • 1500, Indo-European Ayransare credited for the creation of the religion. • Foundation of language is the Vedic religion. • No specific founder • Spread to Southeast Asia

  14. Major Contacts • Jainism • Jainism is considered to be a branch off of Hinduism • Similar beliefs and practices • Buddhism • Alike views on afterlife and Dharma • Diffused into Southeastern Asia at the same time
