  1. Welcome to Research ! Ms. Lanich

  2. A little about me. . . • Central Tech High School Class of 2000 • Clarion University for Bachelor’s Degree in English and Secondary Education • Penn State for Master’s Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language • I adopted my daughter, Christina (22) in 2007. • Cat, Windsor • Brothers, Greg (28); Jacob (7) • 9th year of teaching

  4. You Will Succeed!!!!! • If… • You Follow Directions! • Back-up all your documents – 3 Places • Triple save: Email, Friend, and Flash drive. • Hand your work in on time. • Follow Directions…..all directions – like even to put your name on your work – kind of directions.

  5. Some advice from your elders… • “Really research your topic and find really good websites/sources. Pick a topic you are really interested in, not an easy one.” • “I would tell them to use their time wisely in class • NEVER EVER EVER EVER PROCRASTINATE. If Ms. Lanich recommends working on your assignment over the weekend, you better do it! It makes your life sooooo much easier.” • “To keep an open mind because the class is nowhere near as horrible as it sounds. I thought i would hate it but don't at all.” • “Ask if you need help and don't put the project off to the last day…” • “use the resources on [Ms. Lanich’s] website, they're very useful.” • “do not be afraid to ask questions.” • “take advantage of the ability to email [Mr. Kern] at any time with any questions.” • “Try your best (may seem hard, but you will get used to it and will enjoy the cycle of a Research Paper)”

  6. Choosing your Topic You will want to “love” what you’re writing about!

  7. OFF LIMIT TOPICS! Abortion - This is too broad and emotional. Animal Cruelty – kitty has plenty of protectors.

  8. What is your opinion? As you choose a topic, keep an open mind. You don’t have to know much about the topic or have an opinion about it. Your research will help you learn more about your topic and your discoveries will help you form an opinion. Realize, too, that your research will LEAD you in your direction – be prepared to find evidence against your belief and change your view.

  9. What are you interested in? Choose a topic that has a personal interest or connection. Do not choose a topic because it’s easy to find information about it. Be ready to “dig” for information about something that truly interests you. Often the “easy” topics are actually harder than you think. If you pick an easy topic that bores you, you will be bored through January.

  10. Now it’s your turn to explore. . . Explore media: Newspaper Magazine Internet Source Journals Television Radio Personal Contact Find 3 topics: • Select 3 different issues • Write them on your handout. • Bring them to our NEXT class.

  11. . . . . So you will come to class with. . . Your worksheet filled out Topics – 3 different Source listed 2 sentences (minimum) on why you chose the topic Topic: Cell Phones, Driving, and the law. Source: Erie Times News I am really excited to get my license in two years, and there are many laws about cell phone usage. I want to explore what the research says and come to my own view. By doing this research, I will be able to be educated when I get behind the wheel.
