Problem Statement The Public Schools System requires that individual students develop and demonstrate first grade reading skills to advance to the second grade. Developing reading skills is a challenge for first graders. First graders, whose primary language is other than English, have an additional (language) barrier to overcome in order to develop their reading skills. New Language Tutor
Background • 28 million Americans ages 5 and older speak Spanish at home. • 31% of children from Spanish speaking homes have limited English proficiency (LEP). • Hispanic children with LEP perform below their grade level in elementary school • Budgetary cuts are reducing the number of bilingual teachers. Solution • Create a computer based reading tutor that will help children overcome language barriers. New Language Tutor
Goals and Objectives • Build an effective NLT • Capture English text from children’s book utilizing a COTS hand scanner • Develop translation software • Evaluate and test NLT • Have NLT in full production as planned New Language Tutor
