Purpose of the ECIC • Promote the collection and reporting of standardized external cause of injury codes • These codes are important for injury surveillance, prevention and control; cost containment, and public health research • Promote the use of external cause of injury codes by public health practitioners and researchers (Develop educational strategies)
What is an E code? • An alphanumeric code describing an injury’s cause, intentionality, activity, mechanism and place of occurrence • Found in the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM)
Current Status • Updated the White Paper Entitled: External Cause of Injury Codes - Compelling Stories • Working with the Web-based Resource Center on the Development of the ECIC page
Future Focus • Develop an effective web based tutorial to promote awareness and generate support for the standardized collection and use of external cause of injury data • Contract with the Lewin Group • Possible collaboration with CSTE’s Injury Control and Prevention Committee
