  2. Headlines • Launched in 2004 • Jointly provided with the Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD) launched in 1998 • Recognised by the ESRC • 29 DSW and 91 EdD enrolled since the programmes began.

  3. Overall Structure and Exit Awards • Phase 1 Common taught component, DSW and EdD: min 3 terms, one year. Induction (eg to library, VLE) plus 6 weekend workshops: Friday 4.30 - 8.15; Saturday 9.30 - 4.30. • (PG Cert in Social Work Research and Evaluation) • Phase 2 Developing critical perspectives: common with distinct options DSW and EdD, min 3 terms, one year. 6 weekend workshops: Friday 4.30 - 8.15; Saturday 9.30 - 4.30. • (MA in Social Work Research and Evaluation) • Phase 3 The research component: min. 6 terms, 2 years. Supervision within specialism. 3 Saturday workshops p.a. • (DSW)

The programmePhase 1 • Module 1Research and the professional: critically interrogate theory and research and claims for knowledge in the professional context.. • Assessment 5000 word essay - review and critique a published piece of research relevant to your professional setting. • Module 2Research methods and methodology: the ontological and philosophical foundations of knowledge; research design and methods. • Assessment 5000 word essay - design and pilot a research instrument and use this to explore issues of methods and methodology. • Module 3Research and evaluation in professional organisations. • Assessment 7000 word research report - small scale empirical evaluation.

The programmePhase 2, Year 2 • Module 4 Developing critical perspectives: The taught course reflects the areas of study and the methodological interests of the cohort; includes seminars and workshops on substantive issues, relevant social theory and research methods. • Assessment: Critical Analytic Study (CAS) 18-20,000 words: participants choose a specialist subject to develop as a basis for the CAS. This will underpin the research thesis. They may choose a lit. review and/or empirical pilot. The CAS will incorporate an interrogation of the research questions and build on theory and research from Phase 1.

  6. Phase 3Years 3 and 4 • The research component • Thesis: a research based study of normally 35-45,000 words. It is expected that it will be completed within 6 terms. It is assessed through a viva according to doctoral criteria. • Supervision: first and second supervisor. • Required in Year 3 • Research outline (2 sides A4) • Work in progress report/research proposal (6 sides A4).

  7. Virtual learning • Use of VLE (Moodle) • value of library orientation and ITS support • EndNote • synchronous discussions • group reading task included in the Module 1 assignment • Moodle used as a repository for information, for communication purposes etc • Use of Facebook

Who does it? • Senior Social Work and Social Care Professionals - Assistant Directors, Senior Practitioners, Team Managers. • School principals, assistant principals and subject leaders • Lecturer practitioners in HE: Social Work and Teacher Educators, Teaching and Learning Development Unit, ESL, Web Team. • Independent consultants

  10. Time to complete • Average time to complete EdD is 6.65 years - DSW/EdD programme is structured over 4 years. • Pressures on mid-career and mid-life professionals • Majority self-fund (PQ issue) • Lack of recognition by workplace of time required for study.

  11. Participant feedback • Very positive overall feedback • Further develop use of the VLE for discussion about all assignments • Develop training in computing facilities. • Further develop interactivity in all sessions.

  12. External Examiners (EdD and DSW) comments • Strengths • Programmes well run; academically challenging; high standards • Students are supported appropriately • Quality of feedback to students is high (2 markers for each submission) • Areas to consider • Candidates rarely complete in 4 years • Possible link between poor performance on assessed work and low take up of supervision/tutor support • Consider link between CAS and dissertation.
