  1. MYSTERY IN THE DEEP

  2. Summary of the text • The Russian submarine ”Kursk” went to the bottom of the Barents sea august 12, 2000. • Two huge explosions caused the Kursk to sink. • At least two of the Kursk’s ten compartments were immediately flooded. • 118 men were aboard the Kursk. • Russia refused help from other nations for five days. • When the rescue mission started, it is likely that the crew members had already died.

  3. The Kursk The Kursk was 154 meters long, twice as long as a Boeing 747

  4. The tomb of Kursk

  5. Saturday August 12 2000 Different scenarios announced by Russia

  6. Scenario 1: No ships or submarines were in the area, and no one reported a collision Impossible

  7. Scenario 2: The Kursk could have hit an old mine from WW2 or the cold war Possible

  8. Scenario 3: The Kursk could have tried to avoid a real or imagined obstacle, resulting in accidentally hitting the seabed ? Possible

  9. Scenario 4:

  10. Scenario 4: Poor maintenance could have caused a gas leak which could have caused the explosion inside the Kursk Possible

  11. Scenario 5:

  12. Scenario 5: Crew members could have made a deadly error handling torpedoes. Possible

  13. Text analysis The text gives a feeling of what it was like being trapped inside the Kursk. This is achieved by describing the environment in great detail (“The wind howled, and salt spray filled the air”) and by using many adjectives, adverbs and metaphors. The text is also written from the crew’s point of view, and the sympathy lies with the sailors relatives.

  14. Conclusion We don’t know what caused the Kursk to sink, but it is certain that some of the statements of the Russian government is not true. If Russia had requested help from other nations, the crew members might have been saved.
