  2. In your groups discuss how you would go about solving the following problem Eva has read 300 pages of a 652 page book. If she reads 22 pages each day from now on, in how many days will she finish the book?

  3. Read • Visualize the problem • List the facts • 652 page book • She’s read 300 pages • She’ll read 22 pages a day • What is the problem asking? • Question: How many days to finish the book?

  4. Plan • Find an equation for each step: • How many pages does she have left? • 652-300 = p • How many days will it take to finish? • P ÷ 22 = d

  5. Solve • Evaluate the equations • 652-300 = p • P = 352 • Evaluate • P ÷ 22 = d • 352 ÷ 22 = d • D = 16 • It’ll take her 16 days to finish the book

  6. Check • Use inverse operations to check your problem • 16 days time 22 pages • 352 pages • 352 pages plus 300 pages • 652 pages • It checks out!

  8. Try in your groups • Dry cat food comes in regular and jumbo sizes. The 8 oz regular size costs $.96. The 12 oz jumbo size costs $1.35. Which is the better buy? • $.96 ÷ 8 oz = $.12 per oz • $1.35 ÷ 12 oz = $.1125 per oz • Jumbo size is a better deal

  9. Try in your groups • Judy’s school has a 0.5 km track. One day at practice she ran around the track 9 times and then ran another 1 km in sprints. How far did she run that day? • 9 laps times 0.5 km = 4.5 km • 4.5 km plus 1 km = 5.5 km

  10. Try in your groups • An airplane travels 2044 miles in 3.5 hours. Another travels 3146 miles in 5.2 hours. Which airplane is faster? By how much? • Remember d=rt • 2044 = 3.5r • R = 584 mph • 3146 = 5.2r • R = 605 mph • Plane two is faster by 21 mph

  11. Try in your groups • Natural Apple Sauce comes in 8 oz, 10 oz, and 16 oz jars. The 8 oz jar sells for $.54, the 10 oz jar sells for $.62, and the 16 oz jar sells for $1.00. Which jar is the most expensive per ounce? • $.54 ÷ 8 = $.0675 per oz • $.62 ÷ 10 = $.062 per oz • $1.00 ÷ 16 = $.0625 per oz • The 8 oz jar is most expensive per ounce
