Technology, Technologists,Mission ICCM ‘98 Keynote Pete Holzmann
Introduction • Who are we? • What have we accomplished this year? • What can we learn from each other? • What advances do we need to know about?
Introduction • Information flows worldwide… ...enabling a global expression of the body of Christ • There’s a new organ in the body… ...A Nervous System! • We are “neurosurgeons” of the body… ...But making a lot less money J
Who Are We? One part of a global Community: • Christian Technologists… …focused on Mission

49% 32% 19%
99+% <1% <0.1%
Who Are We? Part of a global Community: • Christian Technologists… …focused on Mission • Ministries with High Tech needs • Many Supporters
We're Rather Diverse! Another way to look at our community: • Some are Technologists • Some train Technologists • Intellectually • Spiritually • Some appreciate Technologists
What's a Christian Technologist? • We're NOT primarily users • We put high technology in action… ...and keep it going for the users
What's a Christian Technologist? Hi Tech... what? • Products - Hardware, Software • Digital Media • Digital Content
What's a Christian Technologist? How big is this community? • USA: over 4 million high tech workers (US Dept of Labor) • Women and Men! • More balanced in industry than in ministry Bottom line: • Market research neededin the Christian sector
What do we do? • Different dimensions • Different perspectives… … systems, ... purchasing, ... product, ... media, ... content
What do we do? • Systems Perspective • Networks • Communications • Operations • Development • Integration • Tech Services
What do we do? • Purchasing Perspective • Specify, Recommend, Approve, Buy • Kinds of products • Hardware (Systems & Peripherals) • Communications (Networking & Internet) • Information Storage • Software
What do we do? • Product Perspective • idea: entrepreneur, architect • biz plan: corp. mgmt (CEO, mktg, $$$, ...) • investors: venture capital • sell prototype: market research …and we still don’t have a product!
What do we do? • Product Development • engineers, designers, writers, is/technology managers • Production • manufacturing, QA • Sales & support • marketing, sales, product support, training
What do we do? • Media Perspective • Producer • Director • Designer • etc.
What do we do? • Content Perspective • Research • Data Mining • Librarians • Design • etc.
How did we get here? • Some by DESIGN; • Some by accident; • Some against our will… • But all by God's hand
What are we like? Strengths? Needs? A few thoughts...perhaps in random order We have lots of skills • We seek significance • We don't want to waste our time… …OR to be BORED
What are we like? Strengths? Needs? Communication with each other • We talk a lot… …but network less • Industry vs. Ministry • Resources/Schedule/Results triangle... We help with community... …yet have lack of community!
What are we like? Strengths? Needs? Communication issues with “them” • Hi tech people often not appreciated • IT seen as unspiritual… • Ministries speak a different language • They often can't describe their needs to us Result: Industry technologists often outside the church
Our Strengthsare often Weaknesses • Task oriented… …needing to learn about relationships • We're good at "flow”… …it can be hard to get our attention!
Our Strengthsare often Weaknesses • Our best people are short on time… …yet we don’t use it well • We have the best tools… …& need to learn appropriate technologies
Exciting Challenges Ahead • Global resource directories • Global communication • Global broadcasting • Global tracking • Megasites • …and upgrading our LAN with no budget
A Personal Note • Step back: networking to mobilizing • Dedicated to NOT “going”... • Developing new resources • Mobilization via guerilla marketing • A safe environment for “high value” people • Discipling the high tech community • Global connections: Web, Magazine, CD • A truly global network
It’s time for • Dedicated resources… …behind the scenes • True partnership around the world • A global association… …serving this community Mission + Industry Working Together
This is Real… Today! • Leadership
This is Real… Today! • Leadership • Staff • Facilities …resources to serve the community! …resources to build up the community!
What Else is Needed? YOU ICTA is not the community. ICTA supports the community. People are the community. RELATIONSHIPS.
Pray and consider... • What are the possibilities? • What resources can you help mobilize? • What opportunities do you know of? Pray with us and for us! We’re praying for you… becauseTechnology in Mission is a spiritual issue!
