The Cosmological Argument for the existence of God St Thomas Aquinas 1227-1274
The Cosmological Argument • The Universe and everything in it exists • Everything that exists in the Universe has been caused • There had to be a first cause of everything • God is the first cause of the Universe
Thomas Aquinas on Change and God • In the cosmos as we experience it, it is obvious to us that some things change. Now whatever changes must be changed by another. And if that other itself change, then that too must be changed by another. But this cannot go on to infinity, because there would be no change going on at all. You eventually have to arrive at something that is Unchanging. This is God. • Summa Theologiae I, 1,3
One explanation of creation is found in the Bible… Genesis is the first book of the Bible and gives a clear account of God creating the Universe; God is the first cause
The Genesis Account The Genesis story tells of God creating the world in 6 days and resting on the 7th ; humans were planned and important to Him
He believes that the Universe was created at one point in time as a massive explosion (the Big Bang) As the Universe expanded and cooled, the right conditions arose for life to begin Stephen Hawking is a Physicist at Cambridge University
This idea suggests that the Universe was caused by natural events The Earth and our place on it seems to be a random act of chance The Big Bang
Does the Big Bang mean that God was not responsible for creation? Or… Is God the being that cause the Big Bang to happen? Genesis account vs the Big Bang
Where would a liberal Christian, a fundamentalist Christian, and an atheist fit into these three ideas about God as the first of all causes? Which of the three views do you think has the most merit and why? God vs The Big Bang
Pros Cons The argument is based on experience of the world; all we see does have a cause The Universe just is; it doesn’t need to have been caused It is flexible; it fits with both the Bible and modern science There wasn’t necessarily a first cause; the Universe could be eternal What are the pros and cons of the Cosmological Argument? God is the only eternal and unchanging being so must be the first of all causes It’s a contradiction to say all things are caused apart from God Something must have started everything else off; it’s logical Just because everything we see has a cause, doesn’t mean there has to be an overall reason or plan to the world
