  1. Claude Monet Art Lesson 1st and 2nd Grade

  2. Monet and his Art Work: • Click on this link to view a more extensive collection of Monet’s art works: http://www.claudemonetgallery.org/

  3. So What’s the Big Idea? • The Impressionists were very interested in showing a ‘moment in time’ when creating art. Everyday subjects such as people, and nature were common. • Painting outdoors was popular due to advances in the portability of oil paints in tubes. • The way light affected the appearance of an object was important to the Impressionists.

  4. Essential Questions: • Why did Monet paintso many water lily and garden scenes? • What did Monet do to show how light changed the look of objects in his art work? • How is your art work like Monet’s? How is it different?

  5. Lesson Objectives: • Students will view and discuss Monet’s art work to help them understand the key concepts associated with Impressionism. • Students will incorporate colors inspired by nature in their artwork, including lights and darks. • Students will create a painting that demonstrates the ‘resist’ technique. • Students will demonstrate elements of SEL as they work both individually and collaboratively on an art activity.

  6. Important Art Vocabulary: • Impressionism: style of painting that began in Europe in the 1860’s. It was characterized by artwork that showed a moment in time, the way light changes the way an object looks, and marked the beginning of painting outdoors. • Claude Monet: French artist responsible for starting Impressionism. Famous for his painting of water lilies and gardens at his home in Giverny, France. • Resist:Technique in which a substance is applied to a surface to protect it from receiving paints, inks, or dyes.

  7. SEL Application/Survey: • Name some important things to remember when working either alone, or together, on an art project. • Why is it okay for each of us to have different ideas? • How might you show respect to yourself and others when working as a class or in small groups? • What are some ways to direct not so good (or negative) behaviors into good (or positive) behaviors? • Did you enjoy working more on your individual project or your collaborative project? Did you enjoy them both the same? • Would you like to work together again on a project like this one? If so, do you have any ideas or suggestions for next year?
