Those nonprofits with paid staff, for example, ordinarily compete in local (and sometimes regional and national) labor markets with all other employers for the services of their workers. The reality that nonprofit salaries are often lower than other comparable employers is an indication that they compete poorly, not that they are in any way exempt from these markets. Sales of services (and other goods) in which there is a quid pro quo exchange For those nonprofits engaged in the sale of their services, money, barter or in-kind services are received by the seller in exchange for money, barter or in-kind services from the seller to the buyer. These sales may occur in competitive markets, monopoly markets or under a variety of other circumstances. There are many different types of markets & exchanges (free, regulated, monopolistic, oligopolistic, etc.) Gifts of services characterized by other, more subtle types of reciprocal exchange, that may be recognized, acknowledged or not. The number and scale of gift exchanges are relatively unique to nonprofit settings.
