Shapes Around Us and in Our World 2nd Grade Technology Lab Activity Mrs. Sproule EME5207
Day 1-Explore Our Campus • Discussion: • Today we will be capturing shapes around campus with the digital cameras in small groups. • Let’s discuss the proper ways to use the cameras and functions. • Watch video on how to hold camera properly. • http://video.about.com/cameras/Avoiding-Camera-Shake.htm • What types of pictures can we take and record our thoughts on the Smartboard?
Day 1-continued • Divide into groups and visit the following areas taking pictures of shapes they see: the garden, playground, car rider area, and lunchroom. • They are to pass the camera along to the next person after taking a picture. • Once they have finished, demonstrate how to delete pictures. • Have students decide which pictures they would like to use and delete ones they want to remove.
Day 2-Inserting Pictures into a Power Point Slide • Ahead of time, the teacher will have pictures saved into a folder for the students to access. • Students follow these steps while teacher demonstrates on Smartboard: • 1. Open Power Point • 2. Click on the Office button. • 3. Click on Layout, choosing the Blank slide. • 4. Click on Insert, then picture. • 5. Click My Computer, choose the S: drive, 2nd grade folder, then teacher’s name.
Day 2-continued • Click on one of the pictures they have taken to insert. • Under the picture, they will need to write at least 2 sentences explaining what the object is and what shape it is. • There are four pictures they will need to insert and describe from the areas around campus: garden, playground, car rider area, and lunchroom.
Day 3-Fair Use Lesson • Discuss a time when they wrote a neat story, drew an awesome picture, or took a cool picture of a shape on the playground. How did they feel about their work? • What if someone took their story, drawing, or picture and told everyone it was theirs? How would they feel? • Explain that after this lesson, they will be researching and working on biographies. Writing sample: Lamy Vista http://www.flickr.com/photos/churl/250235189/
