The European Union • is an economic and political union • it has 28 members • it is primarily located in Europe • covers an area of 4,423,147 km2 Obr. 2.
Member states • Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, The Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, The United Kingdom
History of the European Union • The EU began in 1951 when France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg signed the Treaty of Paris and created the European Coal and Steel Community. • The next step was the formation of the European Economic Community established by Treaty of Rome in 1957. This organization set out a common economic and agricultural policy. • They also signed another treaty on the same day creating the European Atomic Energy Community. • The UK, Ireland and Denmark joined in 1973. • In 1985, the Schengen Agreement - the creation of open borders without passport controls between most member states. • The European Union as we know it today dates from 1993 with the signing of the Maastricht Treaty.
EU symbols • Flag – it consists of a circle of 12 golden (yellow) stars on a blue background. The blue represents the west, the number of stars represents completeness, their position in a circle represents unity. • Anthem – is based on the prelude to “The Ode to Joy” (4th movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No.9.). • Europe Day – is a celebration of Europe held annually on the5th and 9thofMay. • Euro – the common currency for the European Union was established in 1999. The first notes were printed in 2002.
Institutions of the EU The EU is governed by seven institutions: • the European Parliament • the European Council • the Council of the European Union (the Council) • the European Commission • the Court of Justice of the European Union • the European Central Bank • the Court of Auditors
