MAIN PRODUCTION EVALUATION By Sophie Hamblin
What ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Q1 The way that my media product (LEFT) uses the conventions of a real media product (RIGHT) is that I have used the same technical conventions such as a dominant image, Masthead, cover/sell lines, colour scheme and issue details much like that of a real music magazine. For the generic conventions I have put all the cover and sell lines around events that have recently happened in the world of rock music such as an images of the Download festival main stage, the breakthrough artist of the years biggest UK tour to date, and also posters to the top of the cover.
I decided to create a music magazine with a genre of rock that follows conventions. I did this because I thought it would be easier to recognize what it’s about and the genre of magazine it is. For the contents page I decided to create it on a double page so it didn’t look too messy. I wanted to carry the colour scheme through to the contents page so that it would look like it has some sort of theme running through it and links to the feature bands colours. The generic conventions I have put images next to the related subject, for example live images next to the review section. I have also separated the page into categories like news, tour dates, reviews etc. The technical conventions that I have used on my contents page are that it has a masthead and a dominant image of the main feature band.
My double page feature I have also used the same colour scheme to emphasize the fact that these are the colours of the feature band. I decided to put an image of the band on one page with an intro to the interview on the bottom 1/3 of the page so the reader knows what the interview is about. The interview is about their new tour, their first UK headline tour, and what they’re planning for those shows. I chose to put the question and their names a different colour to the answer they gave so the reader could see more clearly what the question was and who was giving the answer.
