  1. How I’d approach an essay question on Tu

  2. Analyse how.... What techniques or methods? • ....the beginning.... The letter and first chapter? • ...a strong impression... What does this mean? Why was it strong? • ...one character...?Tu I guess.

  3. So now I have... • What techniques or methods are used by Grace to make Tu interesting and important (or realistic and believable, or central to the narrative...) in the letter and first chapter? • So what are these techniques and methods?

  4. The mystery in the letter (plot) The first person narration, the diary type of language in the journal(style) The direct address in the letter (style) How Tu is made interesting and important at the start of the book? His bitterness and sadness in the letter (characterisation) ...contrasted with... The leap in time from letter to journal (structure) His naive and enthusiastic personality in the journal (characterisation) The war time setting. Promise of action? (setting)

  5. So, I can say... • Grace uses the style of language, the structure of the letter and first chapter, the characterisation of Tu, the wartime setting and the plot itself to make Tu an interesting and significant character.

  6. But why is this all important? What’s so important about the character of Tu? • Grace was expressing her ideas about the damage that war does and the sacrifices that families make in war time. Clearly Tu and his family are still trying to recover from the trauma of war, and all of this is foreshadowed in the exposition.

  7. Choose one question and attack it... • Break down the question • Make your own wording • Brainstorm points • Make a plan of how you would use them • Come up with a thesis statement
