  2. Economic Trends • The gap between wealthy, middle, and the poor has grown nationally • Past & future employment growth in Maryland & Baltimore remains concentrated in health, business, professional, and high tech • Construction & trades are projecting labor shortages

  3. Economic cont’d • There will be less of a national competitive economy & increased global economy with regions feeding into the global economy • Increased CompetitionIncrease in products and services

  4. Economic cont’d. • Energy costs will continue to rise • By 2010 fastest growing economies: • Former Soviet bloc • India • China

  5. National Labor Force • US labor force will be guided by: • Pace of technological change • Shifting demographic patterns • Quickening rate of economic globalization • Boomers may be delaying retirement • Technology will require a highly skilled workforce

National Labor Force cont’d • Workforce – • small core of permanent, benefited workers • Growing contractual • Increasing part time • Top 10 occupations to 2012 • RN’s, teachers, retail, customer service, food prep/service, janitors, cashiers, general operations managers, wait staff, nursing aides/orderlies/attendants • Of the 30 fastest growing occupations- 15 are in health care

  7. Political Trends • Protecting the environment • Energy • Demands for tax cuts • Transparent Operations & increase in accountability of organizations • Political party identification • Local institutions will focus on • Crimes • Schools • Infrastructure

Competition • Standards of Quality becoming clearer, more defined, and more retrievable • Encouraging competition among competitors • The customer will define more of the who, what, when, where & how of organizations • Rising value of skill/professional certifications • We are no longer constrained by what we sell, but by what people buy • Innovation will be the next “BIG” thing

  9. Technology • Omnipresent computing • Powerful computing devices • Hacking, e-terrorism will continue to plague • On line learning is expanding • Digital Divide will narrow

Societal Values • America has one of the world’s most traditional value systems • Success evolved from working hard, education, integrity, and honesty • Growing inequality between affluent and working poor • Non-native borns will be a prominent segment of gateway cities such as Miami, N.Y, L.A

  11. Societal Values cont. • Hispanics/Latinos – fastest growing minority population • Projected to be 50% of workforce by 2020 • Hyper tasking will continue • Americans will continue to re-invent themselves periodically

Education Trends Education Trends (locally): • Baltimore Co. school enrollment will decrease from 2000’s to 2014 as the country ages • 13.7% of students receive special education services • The state average tuition rate increase from 2003-05 was 7% for Community Colleges • 4 yr. college or university average tuition raise was 16% for state schools, 20% for private institutions

Education Trends (USA): • Skills such as conflict resolution, problem solving, reasoning, communication, writing continues to be valued • The demand for K-12 teachers will increase • Life time learning will predominate • Increasing market value of skills of certification
