What is an ERG? • Employee Resource Groups -Wikipedia • “Employee resource groups (also known as ERGs, affinity groups, or business network groups) are groups of employees who join together in their workplace based on shared characteristics or life experiences. ERG's are generally based on providing support, enhancing career development, and contributing to personal development in the work environment.” • Why are ERG’s important? • “In the past 10 to 15 years, employee resource groups began to prove that they were also business assets by demonstrating their value in recruitment and retention, marketing, brand enhancement, training, and employee development. Top management of some companies began to view their ERGs as instrumental to the success of their businesses. This opinion is proliferating as corporations become more global and populations and workforces more diverse.”
How is the APAA a Strategic Partner in the BNL Inclusion & Diversity (I & D) Effort? • I&D Management Steering Committee: ERG Leaders meet with Senior Leadership to discuss topics to advance I&D efforts at the Lab. • 2. Provide scholarships to future STEM talent Undergraduate/graduate students which furthers BNL’s talent pipeline. • 3. Provide speakers on various topics to include research, career development, implicit bias, and other I&D topics (ie: APAA/Comedian, GLOBE/OutAlliance, BWIS/Monthly Speakers) • 4. Outreach efforts by representing the lab in professional societies and recruiting events. • 5. Build community through philanthropic, volunteerism, and social activities (food tastings, vets build, Dragon Boat social events, talent shows, etc.)
What is our mission/goals as an ERG? • Possibilities are: • Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) support the DOE and Laboratory goals to achieve and sustain a diverse and inclusive workplace. Diversity is widely considered a fundamental business practice to achieve organizational success through increased innovation and employee morale. • 2. ERGs provide a welcoming and safe community for socially marginalized employees which helps the Lab hire and retain talent. • 3. ERGs increase the quality of life and potential for collaboration and problem-solving for all Lab employees by providing opportunities to develop community and partnerships.

ERG’s provide employees who normally would not have a “voice” with a direct line to management to voice concerns and mutually develop solutions. • 5. ERG’s enrich the Laboratory and surrounding communities by inviting speakers, sponsoring workshops, and collaborating with local groups and schools. • 6. ERG’s promote the inclusion and growth of underrepresented individuals in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.
