  3. 2 The Brown Dog Charity Group The Brown Dog Charity Group was formed at the start of the new millennium by Mark Storer, Peter Little and Anil Patel It is a non-profit making group that donates every pound it raises directly to cancer related charities. It can only do this thanks to the commitment of its members who pay for all of their own personal expenses. The Brown Dog Charity Group provides money to directly help men, women and children who are suffering from cancer. Money is raised predominantly through an annual challenge held in June. This year Brown Dog are specifically trying to raise money to help children who have cancer. www.browndogchallenge.org.uk Get Bernie to update this with new photos

  6. 5 Fund Raising It is extremely important that we do not loose sight of our main objective; TO RAISE MONEY You have all had the sponsorship forms and we trust you are now actively trying to raise money. Remember you agreed to raise at least £500 • Here are some of the ways money has been raised in the last 3 years: • Ask people to sponsor you (the obvious) • Hold a coffee day (sell cakes/wine/tom bola) – Marks mum raised £1000 doing this! • Organise a Casino night at home – Pete did this last year and raised £250 from 15 guests • Print a one page note, photo-copy and get the kids to post down your street – Mark raised over £500 • Go onto your local radio and tell them about your challenge • Get your local newspaper to do a feature on you • If you know any local bands – ask them to perform and sell tickets – Dave did this and raised £250 • Write to local businesses • Ask friends in local business to sponsor you • Ask external companies – Conference Connections gave us £1000 in 2001 • Get business units at work to do a dress down for you • Anything!!!!

  7. 6 Charities we intend to Support in 2004 Brown Dog 2005 effort is the “Kids with Cancer Appeal” The money raised this year will be given to local children. Here is an example of how money will be used directly to help children who have cancer… From: Zoe Wilkes [zoewilkes@hotmail.com]Sent: 11 April 2005 10:28To: Storer,M,Mark,M3P3 RSubject: Funding for terminal care in the child's home Hi Mark, Following our telephone conversation I am e-mailing to confirm our request and to ask if it would be possible to gain some possible funding from yourselves. I work both at Rainbows and within the community caring for terminally ill children in their homes. 99% of these children are suffering from an oncological illness and have chosen to pass away in their own homes. We are currently looking for ways in which to allow for quicker discharge from hospital as soon as this decision has been made in order that the child and family can settle at home and enjoy a good quality of life well before the child's condition deteriorates. In order to achieve this we are trying to put together some emergency symptom control boxes so as we can grab all the equipment we from one place as soon as possible to get to the child. We have been looking at some 'tool' boxes but we do have to adhere to certain health and safety standards therefore the ones we are allowed to purchase cost in the region of £100 - £150 and we will require 3 of them. The boxes will benefit many children in these circumstances as their discharge from hospital will be quicker and the professionals involved will be able to collect essential equipment within a very small time frame. Should you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact me either via my mobile - 07899 968321, or at Rainbows - 01509 638000. I also access my emails numerous times throughout the day so will respond promptly to your enquiries. Thank you for taking the time to consider our request I very much look forward to hearing from you Very Best wishes Zoe Wilkes Nurse Consultant Children's Palliative Care

  12. 10 Pre-Challenge Training • To prepare for this event we need to work on our endurance & try & simulate the three elements of the event without neglecting our upper body strength (remember carrying a rucksack & climbing requires all round fitness). • To avoid injuries - • Warm up before exercise & cool down afterwards • Build up your fitness slowly • Don’t train if you have a cold or are particularly tired • Include stretching within your exercise regime • Keep hydrated • Allow for muscle recovery (build in rest days & variety into your training) • If you do get injured remember RICE (rest, ice, compression & elevation). • Make a note of the clothes you are most comfortable training in & work out in advance what you will wear for each event & therefore what you will need to carry with you. When you have a really good training session think about what you had eaten & drunk over the previous couple of days & how much sleep you had had etc because these things will help you make good decisions on the day. • If you are new to running & want some good advice the ‘Runners World’ web site is very good. 40. Good Luck with the Challenge Thank you so much for supporting The Brown Dog Charity Group

  41. 2005 Appeal – Children with Cancer In the past few years we have supported The Orchid Cancer Appeal (for men), Breakthrough Breast Cancer Appeal (for women) and the Leicester Royal Infirmary Oncology Unit (for men and women). This year we want to do more for children. In 2003 we created our own Brown Dog Kids Direct Charity and money collected on our 2004 challenge is now being used to help children suffering with cancer. This year we want to raise more money for BROWN DOG KIDS DIRECT This charity provides money directly to parents who are raising money (over and above NHS support) to provide treatment and equipment for Kids who have cancer or for making dreams come true for terminally ill children. Every pound raised goes directly to the children.

  42. PLEASE HELP US Obviously this challenge is all about raising as much money as we possibly can to help men, women and children who are suffering from cancer. This years challenge is special to The Brown Dog Charity Group because we are very keen to break the £100,000 mark - a marvellous milestone in our short history. But more important than that – we desperately want to raise more money this year to help our UK children. If you know an adult who has had to go through chemotherapy or radiotherapy and endured the stress, anxiety and pain that goes with it – you would not wish that on anyone let alone our children. We need to help them and it’s within our gift and good health to do that. Please help us to support UK’s brave children fighting cancer today Thank you so much

  43. HOW TO HELP US You can sponsor one of the Brown Dog team to complete the challenge or if you wish you can just make a donation. You can make a donation now by either: • Transferring money from your account into The Brown Dog Charity Group • Account: Name: Brown Dog Charity Group Account Number: 18439960 Sort Code: 30 67 72 • Pay in (to the above account) at your local branch • Send a Cheque Made out to The Brown Dog Charity Group Send to Mark Storer, 19 Abbotts Oak Drive, Coalville, Leics, LE674SB Sponsorship If you choose to sponsor – once the challenge has been completed you can pay as above.
