Development of the LEAF Programme • The LEAF Programmewasestablishedinternationally in 2000 • LEAF wasstarted up as a coopeationbetween FEE and existing ”forest in school” programmes in Norway, Sweden and Finland • LEAF Programme has a steeringcommitteewithrepresentatives from FEE and the foundingcountries

LEAF Vision Learning about Forests’ vision is to see an increased level of awareness and knowledge about the key role forests play on our planet The Programme will reflect all the functions forests fulfil for people; cultural, ecological, economical and social Understanding the balance between those uses is crucial when studying how humans interact with forests The Programme will message

  6. LEAF Mission Learning about Forests’ mission is to spread environmental education concerning forests and all their values among school children all around the world, through the action-oriented, participatory and positive methods of the Programme.

LEAF Philosophy • All educational activities should be adapted to the local needs of teachers and their students and be suitable for the local curriculum • The Programme will reflect all the functions forests fulfil for people; cultural, ecological, economical and social • Multiple-use of forests is a reality all over the world. Understanding the balance between those uses is crucial when studying how humans interact with forests • Forests, forestry, forest products and recycling are knit together in an everlasting loop • Forests will play an important role in a sustainable society supplying recyclable materials and products based on renewable raw materials

LEAF criteria • Organising institution Institution organising the national programme is an associate or full member of FEE • National operator Organising institution appoints national operator who is responsible for the overall co-ordination of the national programme • National steering committeeBroad-based national steering committee for the programme is established with representatives from various co-operating partners.

  9. LEAF criteria • Programme activities and materials All programme activities, teacher trainings, materials for students and teachers are in accordance with LEAF programme vision, mission and philosophy • covers multiple functions of forests • encourages participating schools/classes/groups to include field trips to forests in their learning about forests activities • if possible, addresses common international theme of LEAF and encourages schools/classes/groups to choose it for their work.

LEAF criteria for participating schools • The school/class/group must work on at least one forest topic a year  • The topic must include: - An ecological understanding of forests or forest processes- An economic dimension of forests- A socio-cultural understanding of forests   • The school/class/group shall be encouraged to choose the theme of LEAF • The forest project must involve at least one field trip to a forest, as well as work in the classroom
