Church • Life-encompassing religious organization to which all members of a society belong. • To be a member of this society, you have to be a part of the church.
Denomination • One of several religious organizations that most members of society accept as legitimate. • Voluntary membership • Competition for members is acceptable
Sect • A religious organization that arises out of a desire to reform an existing religious organization. • Pilgrims separated from the Church of England • RLDS – Reorganized Church of Latter-Day Saints
Cult • A religious organization whose characteristics are not drawn from existing religious traditions within a society. • Church of Scientology
Religiosity • Ways in which people express their religious interests and convictions • 5 ways people display religiosity
5 ways • Belief – what a person considers to be true • Ritual – religious practice members are expected to perform. • Intellectual Dimension – knowledge of holy or sacred scripture. Knowledgeable about their faith. • Experience – certain feelings attached to religious expression. • Consequences – decisions and commitments people make as a result of religious beliefs, rituals, knowledge, or experiences.
